BA (Hons.) GRAPHIC DESIGN
LEVEL

 Module Code
OUGD402

 Module Title
PPP1

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME: Joe Valentine

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Some skills I have gained is the ability to find work and look at design in a different way than I used too, I didn't really look into design that much and to an extent was limited with the research I did, I now look into design a lot more before creating a design, I get inspiration and look further into different artists that are out there at the moment, to get more experience into my design.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I intent to review my progress more as I work, and come to conclusions when finishing briefs, this allows me to note what I am happy with, and what I could have improved on, it allows me to look further into designs and  look at them on a personal level as to whether I like them or not.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

One strength I can identify is creating concepts, I like looking further into a concept and designing something close to my heart, I look further into these concepts than I originally did and have realised how a good concept can push your ideas miles further than everything else.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

Weaknesses is my past knowledge in graphic design, I feel I need to know more about what is going on in the world and what has already happened a bit more, I basically need to start paying more attention to everything.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1- Be more confident, making both my work and my presenting a lot better
2-Spend longer on concepts, making it a strong and developed idea
3-Look further into research, making it more informed by other designers
4-Produce a different type of output instead of print, a range of outputs.
5- Produce a timetable, to structure my work and make sure I'm working to a plan.

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

YOKE

Producing work for Yoke was very interesting, it was the first experience having my work in an exhibition, the concept behind the exhibition was amazing and really worked well, allowing 2 people to communicate over the artwork they have produced. I really enjoyed producing work in my spare time for these and really enjoyed going to the actual exhibition and seeing my work with others, it was the motivation I needed when finishing the module I was on.

Branding

For my branding I wanted to create something that represents me as a person, so after completing some design pages and look further into it my life and creating something I enjoyed, I looked into my coding side, as I have always been very ICT based.

Below are pictures I have taken of some embossing that is in a cycling magazine I was looking through, the design is given an almost 3D interactive side to the design, creating a more interesting and visually appealing design.

It allows the customer interaction and they look further into the design, This is where my concept came in, I looked into creating something code based to represent my life, so therefore, embossing gives an underlying design that can only be seen when felt or looked closely, just like the coding aspects that have inspired me to produce something interactive.

Below are certain aspects of my design that I would like embossed, these would be almost like underlying code that produces an interaction theme that links with me.The design becomes more subtle when it is embossed and the outcome would be more minimal and less in your face.

Aswell as the embossing, I needed something else that related to me, so as I have a very unique aspect to my life having a missing muscle, and you never find anyone like that, I decided to incorporate this into my designs to give it a personal look into my life. I have removed a section of the top left corner to give this illusion, I believe it is a nice little touch to my designs.

I looked into this booklet below to look into different stocks and the best possible option for my embossing, it is important I get the right stock for embossing so that it is as visible as possible.

I mocked up the work in a layout to show the different sort of designs I would like to produce, but given the time for the hand in, I was unable to produce the embossing, I will work with my branding over summer and actually produce a branding for myself to get work. I will effectively work on this all through summer to get a good design.

Presentation

Below is my Presentation:

I started my presentation summing up the first year and what parts I have learnt:

I then went on to talk about different improvements that can be applied for second year:

Below is my self branding at the current point I am at, it will be improved and applied further before second year:

As described below I really want to look into web design again to make some of the second year briefs easier to produce and design:

So as described above I will be coding some of my own things and creating some of my own designs as I go on further throughout summer.

I believe the presentation went alright however could have gone better, I believe my confidence was a big downfall when presenting, I feel like I was worried about what people thought, and my confidence in general. I need to work on this before second  year as I really would like to get rid of my shy attitude and become a lot more confident in myself and my life.

Pressision

We were given the chance to go on a group trip to a professional printers named Pressision, It was very interesting to see the actual printers and how work was submitted, used, worked with then printed. It also give me a good insight into the actual environment in a design workplace, I really enjoyed seeing this and looking further into the different aspects of the workspace. I really enjoyed the trip and intend to go on some trips on my own and look further into more specific trips with the type of design I like to get more knowledge into studios that I prefair.
